Habitat Sarnia/Lambton often organizes our builds into teams. Each team is led by a Crew Leader. Typically, our Crew Leaders have specific experience in a particular task. Our Crew Leaders meet with our Construction Supervisor as part of the advance preparation for our build days.
Volunteers who have a skilled trade or specific trade experience are required in all phases of a Habitat build.
We also count on volunteers to provide the general labour it takes to build a home. There are lots of jobs on a Habitat build site that do not require experience with a hammer and tools. Duties can include framing, siding, insulation, dry walling, painting, laminate floor installation, general site readiness, clean-up and the like. Remember … no experience necessary!
We always have, at minimum two (2) certified first-aiders on our build sites. Volunteers with first aid qualifications play a vital role in ensuring the safety and well-being of our build site volunteers.
The registration of volunteers along with various other support and administrative tasks on our build sites are all undertaken by volunteers. We provide morning and afternoon coffee breaks and lunches for every build day. Volunteers work with us to coordinate and organize the food services necessary to support our build days.
The health and safety of our staff and volunteer teams is job #1. Ensuring that our volunteers are well-versed in safe build-site practices is a priority for us.
Participation in Safety, Health and Environmental (SHE) training is mandatory for all volunteers entering a Habitat build site. We offer this training free of charge. Applicants will complete their SHE training as part of our on-line application.
Volunteers must be at least sixteen (16) years of age to be allowed on a HFH Sarnia/Lambton build site.
